1. Summer is a time for traveling with the family, which sometimes includes your pet. It’s not uncommon for pets to experience anxiety as a world traveler. If this is your pet, ask your veterinarian about prescribing a sedative or anti-nausea medication to make the trip easier and more enjoyable for the both of you.
2. Socialization is great for your pup. It’s often said that “a tired puppy, is a good puppy.” Provide your energetic pup with opportunities to play and socialize at a local weekly obedience class, doggie day care or dog park. Make certain, however that core vaccines are required to prevent the spread of disease from dog to dog.
3. Through the summer months, ear cleaning is extremely important for your pet. Swimming and high humidity can make pets more susceptible for bacteria to infect their ears. Weekly ear cleaning with an appropriate ear cleaner can help decrease the frequency and or severity of ear infections that affect your pet.
4. Spring, summer, and fall can be the worst times for pets with environmental allergies. To help decrease skin flare ups consider wiping your pet down with a damp towel each time they come in from outside to minimize the allergens absorbed through their skin. Oatmeal or moisturizing baths weekly can help calm itchy skin. Omega 3 fatty acid supplements can also decrease inflammation associated with environmental allergies.
