Grand Rapids, Mich (WOTV) - I was looking at some divorce statistics recently and ran across some information that I was unaware of and thought I would pass it along. The U.S. ranks first, worldwide, in the number of divorces, 4.95% of 10,000 people.. Australia is 0.252% of 10,000 and New Zeeland 0.263 of 10,000. I don't think this means that women in the U.S. are less happy, but that they are less likely to put up with an unhappy, dysfunctional or abusive marriage.
Interestingly, matriarchal societies have more divorces than patriarchal societies. Sri Lanka has 0.015% of divorce per 10,000 people, Thailand has 0.058% and Korea has 0.088% of 10,000 respectively. The fact that these countries have so much lower divorce rates stems from the fact that they also do not have equal rights for the sexes. Women do not have the opportunity to dissolve an unhappy, dysfunctional or abusive marriage without fighting a system where they are not considered equal to their husbands.
I am not advocating divorce, but during this season of Thanksgiving, I have to say that I am exceedingly grateful that the women in our country not only have the right to divorce, if they find themselves in a bad marriage, but have all the other rights we enjoy thanks to the women who fought and won them before us.
