GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) - In March and April, Frederik Meijer Gardens hosts butterflies and months from around the world. Throughout the five story Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory, visitors will see thousands of beautiful butterflies soaring overhead, hovering on flowers and fluttering along the forest floor.

In addition to regular visitors, Frederik Meijer Gardens also offers special programming for schools. These programs allow teachers to reinforce tour concepts with a related classroom activity. The field trip includes a 45 minute guided tour with a 45 minute classroom experience.

Butterfly Basics: Life Cycle Art Project, is a class where students learn about metamorphosis while creating a art souvenir portraying the four stages of the butterfly life cycle. In addition, fascinating facts about each stage are shared. Concepts discussed include insect anatomy, camouflage and other amazing defensive strategies. Afterwards the students tour the gardens butterfly collection.

The cost of the program is $5 per student and can accommodate up to 50 students. The cost includes room rental, materials and instruction fees. The program runs through April 30, 2013 and can be booked by calling 616-974-5239.
