On Monday, December 10, Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services will be opening a new Mother and Baby Program that will treat women suffering from a number of perinatal mood disorders including postpartum depression. Only the second of its kind in the country, this program will allow mothers and their babies to stay for partial hospitalization and receive treatment while continuing to bond with their newborn baby.
While the mothers are in treatment, the babies will stay in an onsite nursery, which will remove many barriers to women seeking treatment such as separation from their baby, childcare and feeding issues. It allows therapists to work with mother and baby, eliminating poor outcomes for both.
Some of the moms in the program face additional hardships, many of which are economic. Those coming from a distance may lack the means to pay for gas, rent a hotel room or pay for a meal while they are in the program. Others have difficulty buying necessities like diapers, formula or clothing. Pine Rest staff would like to eliminate additional barriers and stressors by providing basic items, as well as gift cards for gas, food and hotel rooms when necessary.
