Mikeyla and her five siblings are orphans. Since she was 12 years old she has been in charge of her sisters and the six of them live together and support one another. Through Bethany Christian Services One Family Campaign, they are sponsored, which means they have a safe dwelling, a stove for cooking and a clean water filter.

Maranda joined WOOD TV8, WOTV 4 and WXSP TV in January of 2001 as Children and Family Services Manager, but has served the community as an advocate for kids and families for over 20 years.
