Signs of a reading disability

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) - If you notice your child is having difficulty reading, they may have a reading disability. Possible signs to watch for include:

• Your child resists reading aloud to you, although loves to listen to you read.
• Reading seems like a laborious task to them.
• Your child complains that reading is hard.
• Your child is in the lowest reading group at school or behind their peers.
• Your child feels embarrassed about reading aloud at school or around peers.
• They have difficulty in sounding out unknown words.
• They have difficulty with common words seen many times before.
• They rely on memorizing words rather than figuring them out.
• Your child guesses rather than sounds out an unknown word.

Experts with the Specialized Development Language Center stresses that if you see some of the signs above, don't panic. Start by monitoring your child daily. Maybe they were having  a bad day one day or maybe you were, so this is something you need to watch over a period of time. The first person to approach is your child's teacher or a doctor. They will instruct you on how to seek help.
