EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) - The days of pregnant women sitting back and relaxing are long gone. Maintaining a regular exercise routine throughout your pregnancy can help you stay healthy and feel your best. Regular exercise during pregnancy can improve your posture and decrease some common discomforts such as backaches and fatigue. There is evidence that physical activity may prevent gestational diabetes (diabetes that develops during pregnancy), relieve stress, and build more stamina needed for labor and delivery.

If you were physically active before your pregnancy, you should be able to continue your activity in moderation. Don't try to exercise at your former level; instead, do what's most comfortable for you now. Low impact exercise like yoga, is a popular physical activity that is highly recommended.

Yoga helps relieve pregnancy-related discomforts and prepare you for childbirth by encouraging self-awareness, relaxation, and a connection to the growing baby. Attending yoga is also a wonderful opportunity to connect with other women as you breathe, stretch, and strengthen. The class will include gentle modified poses and breathing exercises.

The mission of Seva Yoga is to create an inclusive yoga studio where all students can meet, learn, and practice, this includes pregnant women.  Seva Yoga is located in Gaslight Village, in the heart of East Grand Rapids.  They offer a prenatal yoga class on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. For more information or to register for a class, contact Seva Yoga.
