Grand Rapids, Mich (WOTV) - Nasal irrigation is an ancient Ayurvedic technique known as Jala neti, which literally means nasal cleansing in Sanskrit, where the practitioner uses a neti pot to perform the irrigation. Neti pot use is starting to be recognized by Western medicine under the term nasal irrigation to treat a variety of conditions.
I like to Neti daily, usually as the first thing in the morning with other cleansing practices. You may also do this at the end of the day if you work or live in a dusty or polluted environment. I often use mine in airports between flights.
Basically all you have to do is take your Neti pot, add ¼ tsp of sea salt and the warm distilled or filtered water. Leaning your head to one side while breathing through the mouth, place the spout end at your nostril and allow the warm solution to run through the sinus passage and out the other side. Repeat on the second side.
Neti pot use has many benefits!

• Clear out sticky, persistent mucus and help reduce nasal congestion

• Cleanse and rid the sinus cavities of allergens, irritants, and contaminants

• Treat chronic sinusitis

• Treat allergic rhinitis

• Prevent common colds and flu

• Relieve nasal dryness

• Improve breathing

• Reduce cough and other symptoms of post-nasal drip

• Generally improve sinus health.
