GRAND RAPIDS, Mich (WOTV) - Popcorn and movie night make for great indoor winter fun.  Now lets put a healthy spin on the snack.
Firstly, I would advise avoiding obviously movie theater and microwave popcorn.  This snack is full of things you do not need or want in your diet. You can make better tasting and healthier popcorn just as fast with the microwave.

Air popping is going to be your least calorie option but I also like my whirly-pop on the stove top.  Either way that you go, give olive oil and sea salt a try.   I use Old World Olive Press organic butter flavor olive oil.  You will be amazed by the butter taste in this product!  This blend gets it's butter flavor from  fermented corn and beets, much like vegan butter is made.  So enjoy all the health benefits of EVOO and the flavor of butter without the harmful saturated affects. It really makes popcorn special and its not hard to think of many other uses for this blend as a healthier alternative to butter.

Now here are some facts you might find of interest to sweeten the deal:

  • Old world olive press is 100% Natural.
  • There are only 120 calories per serving and it is mono-saturated so its the good fat!
  • Medical research recommends 2 tablespoons per day of olive oil for optimal health benefits.
  • Olive oil is rich in anti-oxidants and not only helps you lower bad cholesterol but elevates the good.

I substitute olive oil for butter in many recipes and feel great about what I am eating and serving my family.  Give it a try, see and feel the difference it can make by just swapping out one not so healthy thing for something that actually gives you health benefits.
Here is a quick substitution chart you can use-

Butter/Margarine              Olive Oil
1 tsp                                       3/4 tsp
1 tablespoon                          2 1/4 tsp
1/4 cup                                   3 tablespoons
1/3 cup                                   1/4 cup
1 cup                                      3/4 cup
