Grand Rapids, Mich (WOTV) - Running is a great way for people to stay in shape. You can do it anywhere, all you need is your clothes and shoes. But just like any other sports there needs to be a balance of actions to maintain optimal health and performance.

I see a lot of runners at Seva Yoga. Recently I sat down to discuss the benefits of Yoga with a very active runner, Scott Sneller from Gazelle Sports. Scott has been coming to Seva for some time now, Scott had previously been a self confessed “running only” kind of guy but now extols the benefits that Yoga has brought to his running practice. Here are 3 poses to start with the will help you to feel better when you run.

Crescent Lunge – Performed kneeling or standing, opens the hip flexors of the extended leg and creates strength in the core as well as stability in the quadriceps group of the forward leg.

Pigeon Pose – From the previous kneeling position, take your foot to your opposite hip or slightly higher, flexing or pointing toes depending on your knee stability. The opposite leg is extended straight back behind you.

Back Bend- Lying on back with feet hip width and parallel, lift hips while drawing in shoulders beneath you. Lace fingers if possible.
