Grand Rapids, Mich. (WOTV) - The family room is often the most frequently used area of your home, so updating this space should be a priority. Look over the checklist below to determine which of your family room elements need a total overhaul, moderate upgrade or a simple refresh.

FLOORING – I need to:
•OVERHAUL: completely replace stained or damaged flowing with new carpet or a hardwood/area rug combination.
•UPGRADE: add an area rug to spice up a room or to hide a floor that’s not in ideal condition.
•REFRESH: Have your carpet professional cleaned. This simple move can make a big difference!

WALLS – I need to :
•OVERHAUL: knock down select walls between the family room and kitchen to create a more open floor plan.
•UPGRADE: Apply textured wallpaper or graphic accents to add visual interest.
•REFRESH: revitalize dingy walls with a new coat of paint.

FURNITURE- I need to :
•OVERHAUL: swap out old, outdated furniture for something entirely new.
•UPGRADE: Change out select pieces that have the most wear or have them refinished/reupholstered.
•REFRESH: Give old furniture a new life by painting wooden pieces or adding slipcovers to sofas and chairs.

LIGHTING- I need to:
•OVERHAUL: install a designer lighting system with track lighting, can lighting or other built-in elements.
•UPGRADE: change out fixtures and lamps for more modern ones.
•REFRESH: Brighten up a space with new lampshades or higher wattage bulbs.
