Grand Rapids, Mich. (WOTV) - It’s officially 2013, so if you’ve been procrastinating on your remodeling projects, stop right now!  Get organized, get ready, get going!

Here's a checklist to get you started:

1. Do your research.
a. Select the right product.  Base grade is fine for some things but make sure all the products will interact well together.

2.  Paint
a. Typically something you can do yourself – unless your room needs scaffolding, etc.
b. Make sure you choose the right finish
c. Most major companies have some on-line resources to see how the color looks

3. Prioritize
a. Think about WHERE you’ll spend money

i. DIY projects
ii. Hiring the professionals so you get all the warranties

4. Consider lighting
a. Accent a piece of art or illuminate an entire room
b. If you do it yourself – make sure you turn off the electricity!

5. Pad your budget for the unknowns
a. 10-15% is standard
b. 20% if it’s an older home

6. Think about the layout
a. Paint, wallpaper and new hardware can make a big impact.
b. But if your kitchen for instance doesn’t work for your lifestyle/family, putting money towards a reconfiguration is money well spent.

7. Look to the outdoors
a. “Bringing the outdoors in” thru sliding glass or French doors are great investments to expand your living space.
b. Use weather-resistant fabrics and materials that coordinate with your interior furnishings

8. Declutter
a. Least expensive remodeling project!
i. Have a friend or realtor tell you what furniture/kncickknacks have to go
ii. If you have to shimmy sideways thru a room – time to declutter!
iii. Keep shelves cleaned and organized and certainly consider moveable storage units
