GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) - Most likely the biggest hurdle you will face when going through a marriage dissolving is your own imagination. We all envision horrible things that can happen and start to stress about them. After all, worry is simply fear of what might happen. What if you cannot pay your bills? What if you end up alone for the rest of your life? What if you have to sell your home? The list is endless.
How can you deal with the stress and worries so they don't drive you crazy? This is the best time to start a practice of living in the moment. You cannot change what has already happened. It is done and gone. You cannot control what will happen in the future. No one knows what tomorrow will bring. The only thing you can control is how you are now, in this moment. Are you healthy and breathing? Are you okay right this very second? Take a breath and tell yourself, "I am okay right now." Check in with yourself every time you start to worry and stress and ask that question, "Am I okay in this moment?" You will be shocked at how your attitude and stress level improves.
Breath. It is amazing how we breath throughout our lives without thinking about it and how we don't when we are in stressful situations. Have you ever noticed if someone is yelling and you are in a tense situation you hold your breath? If you find yourself in a stressful situation, stop, excuse yourself for 30 seconds and focus on breathing. Breath in through your nose for a count of 4, letting your stomach expand. Breath out through your mouth for a count of 4 while letting your shoulders relax. Breathing deeply for 30 seconds will help you lower your stress level and relax your body and mind.
Meditate. Meditation is one of the very best things that you can do for yourself during times like these. You don't need lessons, you don't need to worry about doing it 'right', you just need to be still, quiet your mind and turn inward. Sit or lay comfortably, close your eyes and focus on your breath. If your mind starts the 'monkey chatters' (the non-stop nonsense that goes through your head 24/7) just bring your focus back to your breath. Five minutes, yep, just five minutes of meditation every day can alleviate a high stress day and bring a feeling of peace.
Cultivating strategies to deal with the stresses of going through a divorce can give you a big assist in your wellbeing and self esteem so try to live in the moment, breath deeply and meditate.
