GRAND RAPIDS, Mich (WOTV) - Bullying is a major issue that has been affecting students of all ages. Larry Fisher (Dean of Student Life at West Michigan Aviation Academy ), Heidi Cate (IES Superintendent/ Special Education Director), and Curtis Kooiker (Teacher at Georgetown Elementary) had a panel discussion with Maranda about making your kids smarter about bullies and what staff members at public schools are doing to prevent it.
Schools have been empowering kids to speak up and Heidi explains that school officials should have practices in place so kids can report a bully, without the fear of retaliation. Larry talks about observers being the most important player in a bullying situation, and it's crucial to teach and prepare kids to stand up for someone being bullied or know who to tell to make it stop.
