GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) - We all look forward to summer in Michigan and the wealth of outdoor activities that come with it. One little pesky problem, literally, can be mosquitoes.
My family and I recently moved to a home on a river and have lots of these little neighbors buzzing around outside. I really didn't like the thought of bug bombing our yard with toxic chemicals or spraying our skin with the same.
So this was the birth of the idea of finding out what bugs DON'T like. I researched by looking at lots of store brand natural bug sprays and found at least 21 different essential oils and at least 3 that seemed to be the common denominators in all.
From here it was all testing, trying different blends and levels and even testing longevity.
All of these oils can be purchased at local health food stores or online. I also purchased spray bottles online but you could even recycle old spray bottles for this purpose.
The base is distilled water 70% / witch hazel15% / vegetable glycerine15%
The Best results were reached with this combination -
- Citronella – 10 drops
- Peppermint – 10 drops
- Lemongrass – 10 drops
- Cedar – 5 drops
- Clove – 5 drops
- Geranium – 5 drops
I also had good results with added Lavender so this can be added if desired for a nicer scent. Also if you cannot find vegetable glycerine, grape seed oil is a nice replacement.
These are the quantities for a 5 oz. bottle.
