In a recent study done by Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center and published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, studies show that daily consumption of walnuts can help prevent heart disease and diabetes. This goes back to my belief that everything we need to stay in good health, is in nature. Now I am not saying that merely adding walnuts to an unhealthy diet can save you, however, if you are moving in the direction of health, why not add some walnuts to what you are eating and see what the results are?
In the study, adults who took part were overweight, had an average age of 57 years, and suffered at least one of several conditions such as high blood pressure, high blood glucose, high triglycerides, or low HDL cholesterol. Any of these can raise the risk for diabetes or cardiovascular disease.
During an 8 week period they all added 2 ounces of walnuts to their normal diet and also adjusted out (this is important to note) the caloric equivalent so that their daily calorie intake was the same as during the control phase of the study. Results revealed study participants' blood vessel function improved significantly although their body weight and size remained the same. They also experienced a beneficial trend in reduction of systolic blood pressure, although not quite enough to be of any importance.
So what am I even saying here? Try some walnuts this week, what have you got to lose? Crunch them up over your oatmeal. Toss some with your salad. Use them in place of ground animal flesh. I just used some as a topping for an apple bundt cake. Delicious.
