GRAND RAPIDS, Mich (WOTV) - According to wellness expert, Michele Fife, yoga is a great way to manage stress. Yoga, meditation and breathing techniques are all lovely tools to have in your life to keep you in balance through life’s ups and downs. People often ask me if Yoga can help them to lose weight and the answer is simply yes and here is why.
Firstly, feeling stressed drives many of us to sweets, salts and fats. Stress is like a trigger to some of our worst habits. So it is known that we eat when feeling stressed or emotional. But even if you are not grabbing the fast food under stress you may still find weight gain and hard to shed pounds. Our bodies are wonderful efficient things. We are designed in such a way that our body can really take care of itself really well providing we give it the conditions it needs. Stress can affect our sleep, our metabolism, our digestion and elimination. All of these factors leaving toxins in the body as we are unable to process nutrition as we should. Basically our body views stress as a perceived threat. A threat to our being and this puts our nervous system on high alert. Our energies are diverted away from basic bodily functions and instead being used to hold muscle tension.
So take a nap, take a walk, leave the cell phone off and read a book. Take 10 minutes to put everything down, including that running “to-do” list in your head and just close your eyes to breath. Letting go of stress in our lives will give your body the space to do what it does best – heal itself.
