GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) - How can you help prevent climate change for the planet? Would it be easier for you to drive less or give up meat in your diet? You might be surprised to discover that the livestock agriculture industry generates more greenhouse gas emissions than all the planes, trains and automobiles on the planet.
The methane emissions from cows have 21 times the warming potential of carbon dioxide. That is just a small part of the problem. The increased demands for meat, the more forests are being cleared to use the space as pastures to feed these animals. As the trees are cleared so is the earths natural defense and method of storing all this carbon.
Meat consumption has more than doubled from 1980 to present day. Coincidentally so has the incidence of many modern health problems. The current rate of meat consumption is a threat to the quality of our water, air and soils, affecting climate and biodiversity. And for you personally, a threat to your wellness. Eating is our first form of interaction with the environment. If this is not based upon right action, all of our subsequent actions will suffer.
What I am suggesting to you is to try less as more. Go animal free one meal per day or one day per week at first. See how you feel. Get creative with your veggies and grains. Check in with your self and your doctor. Are you feeling and sleeping better? How is your weight and cholesterol?
Little things you do for yourself can affect us all. Together we make a difference.
